Bicentennial Heritage Peace Garden Trail:

Bicentennial Heritage Peace Garden Trail:

The St. Marys Memory Garden
St. Marys Street and Bartlett Street

St. Marys, Georgia

The existing St. Marys Memory Garden (created by the St. Marys EarthKeepers in 2008) is comprised of a large, wheelchair-accessible, southern-style gazebo, a Tribute Pathway upon which members of the community inscribe “dedication” bricks, a solar-lit flagpole and a 2-acre water-front greenspace (available for parking).

It is approximately 20 feet from the ancient wall of the historic Oak Grove Cemetery (est. 1788): the final resting place of Acadians and War of 1812 soldiers.

The Welcome Center provides trolley tours to the many historic sites, including Memory Garden and Oak Grove Cemetery, while the National Park Service Museum (two blocks from the Memory Garden) offers a superb display of War of 1812 artifacts and information.

As the only access to Cumberland Island National Seashore, St. Marys is guaranteed over 300 visitors per day and the ferry docks are a mere two blocks from the Memory Garden.

___________________________________________________

St. Marys, Georgia, (first settled in the mid 16th century by the Spanish and established by act of the state legislature on December 5, 1792) is considered by many to be the crown jewel of the Intracoastal Waterway. Just north of the Florida/Georgia border, it is the only access point to the legendary Cumberland Island National Seashore. http://www.nps.gov/cuis/index.htm

Joseph Bachlott, (1st Lt., Scott's Detachment). Robert Deloney, (Pvt., Scott's Detachment). Thomas Hardee, John McIntosh, (Brig. General), Lt. Col. William Scott, (Scott’s Detachment) – these are but a few of the soldiers of the War of 1812 who lie within the grounds of St. Marys’ historic Oak Grove Cemetery (est. 1788).

The Battle of Fort Point Peter, located at the mouth of the St. Marys River was a successful attack by a British force on St. Marys. The battle occurred in January 1815, after the signing of the Treaty of Ghent but before the treaty's ratification. The British ended their occupation of St. Marys after looting the town, burning the fort to the ground, (including its blockhouses and barracks) and withdrawing to Cumberland Island. Archeologists have discovered a rich treasure-trove of artifacts at Point Peter – all of which are on display at the Cumberland Island National Seashore Museum.

Now, 200 years later, St. Marys, Georgia, becomes the latest member of the Binational Tourism Alliance Bicentennial Peace Garden Trail. This initiative was launched in the Niagara region and the BTA is now working to highlight the War of 1812 and a shared history of peaceful association and cooperation between Canada and the USA. The world's two largest and resource-rich superpowers have cohabited along the planet's longest undefended border for 200 years - while being staunch allies and helpmates in times of trouble. What a lovely precedent to have set. And what an uplifting thing to celebrate for that which began in turmoil and conflict ended in lasting brotherhood and peace.

St. Marys' existing Memory Garden will now become a Peace Garden. With its large and graceful southern-style gazebo, 2 acres of greenspace, harbor views, Tribute Pathway, close proximity to the War of 1812 museum and position adjacent to Oak Grove Cemetery, there can be no more fitting a place to fly the flags of The United States and Canada.

Cumberland Island Tours Mark Important Milestone

Cumberland Island National Seashore News Release

February 14, 2012

For Immediate Release

Fred Boyles   912-882-4336 ext. 227

CUMBERLAND ISLAND TOURS MARK IMPORTANT MILESTONE

St. Marys, Georgia - February 11, 2012 marked six months of operation of the Lands and Legacies Tours on Cumberland Island National Seashore.   Since its beginning on August 11th 1,284 visitors have taken the five to six hour trip that takes them to Plum Orchard, the Settlement and other historic sites on the Island.  The overall reaction from visitors has been highly positive according to comments offered by those who have taken the trip.  The program utilizes vans to carry up to 10 people at a time with as many as two trips per day taken.    “The Lands and Legacies Program has proven to be very popular by those visitors to have taken the tour,” stated Fred Boyles, Superintendent of the National Seashore, “Our Park Guides along with the rest of the staff have done a great job getting the program started and working through the problems that can crop up with any new initiative.”

Of the1,284 visitors that have taken the tour, 41% have been adults, 56% have been seniors (over 62) and 3% have been children (under 16).  Roughly 11% of the visitors that have taken the concession passenger ferry to the Island in the last six months have been those who took the tour.  This may indicate that the new tour has attracted many new visitors to the Island who may not have visited otherwise.  Another statistic about participation in the tour was that the average trip was 7.4 visitors.  Of the 143 days that the tour was offered, on only one day did the tour not run due to lack of participation.  The tour has been used by handicapped visitors which was an important goal of the program.

The South End Shuttle was also initiated in early August.   Participation in that service was not quite as popular.  That program offered visitors a lift between the Dungeness Dock, the Dungeness beach crossover and Sea Camp.  The Shuttle was popular on days of high visitation and during hot weather.

Federal legislation passed in 2004 requires a minimum of five tours and a maximum of eight tours daily to visit historic sites on the north end of the Island.  After completing a Transportation Management Plan and required environmental compliance resulting in a Finding of No Significant impact in May 2009, the park was cleared to start the tours.  Lack of funding to support the full initiative prompted the park to seek permission to pursue a more modest proposal for a limited time to assess the effectiveness of the program.

The park will continue to offer the program and monitor its participation.  A visitor use study is planned for the program later in the year to formally assess reaction to the program.  The program did not operate on those days that when a hunt was scheduled or on the days that the ferry does not run during the winter months.

Advance reservations are usually necessary and highly encouraged.  There have been instances when visitors came to take the tour only to learn that the program was booked full.  Reservations can be made by calling 912/882-4335 or toll free at 877/860-6787.  Important information about the program is available at the park’s web site www.nps.gov/cuis (Lands and Legacies Tours).  The fee for the tour is $15 for adults and $12 for seniors and children.

Cumberland Island is the largest barrier island off the coast of Georgia, encompassing more than 36,000 acres of maritime forests, salt marsh and beaches.  The island is also home to over 9,800 acres of Congressionally designated Wilderness.  The island’s natural and cultural resources provide a rich and diverse habitat for wildlife and offer a glimpse into the long history of coastal Georgia.  Established in 1972, 2012 is the 40th anniversary year the park has been operated by the National Park Service.  The Seashore is accessible by foot-only, passenger ferry from the historic community of St. Marys, Georgia.

Friday – 2/17 – 9PM

Saturday – 2/18 – 7PM

Sunday/Dimanche – 10 minutes – English – Patrick Doyon

Every Sunday, it's the same old routine! The train clatters through the village and almost shakes the pictures off the wall. In the church, Dad dreams about his toolbox. And of course later Grandma will get a visit and the animals will meet their fate.

The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore – 15 minutes – No Dialogue – William Joyce and Brandon Oldenburg

Inspired, in equal measures, by Hurricane Katrina, Buster Keaton, The Wizard of Oz, and a love for books, The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore is a poignant, humorous allegory about the curative powers of story. Using a variety of techniques (miniatures, computer animation, 2D animation) award winning author/illustrator William Joyce and co-director Brandon Oldenburg present a hybrid style of animation that harkens back to silent films and MGM Technicolor musicals. Morris Lessmore is old fashioned and cutting edge at the same time.

La Luna – 7 minutes – English – Enrico Casaroasa

A fable of a young boy who is coming of age in the most peculiar of circumstances. Tonight is the very first time his Papa and Grandpa are taking him to work. In an old wooden boat they row far out to sea, and with no land in sight, they stop and wait. A big surprise awaits the little boy as he discovers his family's most unusual line of work.

A Morning Stroll – 7 minutes – No Dialogue – Grant Orchard and Sue Goffe

When a New Yorker walks past a chicken on his morning stroll, we're left to wonder which one is the real city slicker.

Wild Life – 13 minutes – English – Amanda Forbis and Wendy Tilby

Calgary, 1909: an Englishman moves to the Canadian frontier, but is singularly unsuited to it. His letters home are much sunnier than the reality. Intertitles compare his fate to that of a comet.

Live Action – total running time approx. 110 minutes

Thursday – 2/16 – 9PM

Friday – 2/17 – 7PM

Saturday – 2/18 – 4:30PM and 9PM

Pentecost – 11 minutes – English – Peter McDonald and Eimear O'Kane

When Damian is forced to serve as an altar boy at an important mass in his local parish, he faces a difficult choice: conform to the status quo, or serve an extended ban from his life's passion – football.

Raju – 24 minutes – English/German – Max Zähle and Stefan Gieren

Director Max Zaehle, together with his Director of Photography Sin Huh, and wonderful actors Wotan Wilke Möhring and Julia Richter, succeed at making the moral dilemma faced by couples wishing to adopt emotionally palpable.

The Shore – 31 minutes – English/Gaelic – Terry George and Oorlagh George

After 25 years in exile, Jim Mahon (Ciaran Hinds) returns to Ireland to show his American daughter Patty (Kerry Condon) his Belfast roots. But things don't go as planned when she learns of a secret love triangle and a long lost best friend, Paddy (Conleth Hill). Their reconciliation leads to hilarious confusion. Directed by two time Oscar nominee Terry George, The Shore won Best Director and Best Actor at the Rhode Island Film Festival, and is nominated for an Irish Film and Television Award.

Time Freak – 11 minutes – English – Andrew Bowler and Gigi Causey

A neurotic inventor creates a time machine, only to get caught up travelling around yesterday.

Tuba Atlantic – 25 minutes – Norwegian – Hallvar Witzø

Everybody is going to die one day. Oskar, 70, is going to die in 6 days. He is now ready to forgive his brother for a disagreement years ago. Will he reach his brother, who he believes live on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, before it's too late?
