About the event’s host and beneficiary: The AED Alliance, a St. Marys-based 501c3 nonprofit, is on a mission to educate the public about the need for AEDs in schools, in public places and at special events. The life-saving heart-shocking devices are the only remedy when someone undergoes Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA), which is the most common cause of death in schools. The Alliance is working to ensure there are AEDs in all schools throughout the country by 2014. It’s also setting up its award-winning “Borrow an AED” programs throughout the nation, enabling communities to “sign out” AEDs as needed. St. Marys residents Harold and Becky Cohn founded the Alliance after their 15-year-old son, Andrew, died of SCA following a collision during a baseball game that forced his heart into an abnormal rhythm. If an AED had been available, he would very likely still be alive. Learn more about the Alliance at www.aedalliance.com.

Free River of Life Screening

For those who missed the live performances of River of Life recently, or if you'd like to see it again FREE, here's your chance to see the original musical in which the history of the area comes alive.

St. Marys Little Theatre will be showing the River of Life DVD on its movie screen at Theatre by the Trax this Friday, June 1, at 7 pm. Admission is free, but only the first 150 people to show up the night of the screening will get in.

We had five sold-out performances with standing ovations every night and we think River of Life was so popular because it depicted accurate history in a fun and whimsical way.

Here are more details:

"People loved to hate Admiral Cockburn as he bragged about burning the White House and burning St. Marys. When Aaron Burr shot Alexander Hamilton, the message was couched in a lyrical song that proclaimed 'it's the gentleman's way.'" Burr figured into local history when he retreated to the Clark House on Osborne Street in St. Marys after the infamous duel.

River of Life begins in the earliest of times with the Timucuan Indians, then traverses thousands of years portraying the trials and triumphs of St. Marys' founding fathers, the tragic Acadians, early settlers, railroad and paper mill workers, the founder of Black education, Carnegie descendants on Cumberland Island and more…all the way to the establishment of Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base and St. Marys' iconic waterfront park.

L. J. Williams, Vice Chair of St. Marys Little Theatre, says River of Life brings together all the great cultures that contributed to the diversity of Coastal Georgia.

"The upcoming free screening will engage the audience in the same way as the live performances did," Williams said. "Through the eyes of those who came before us, a powerful story unfolds and shows how everything fits into the big picture that is who we are today."

Williams went on to say that every school child should view the screening if they missed the live performances.

"Here is an opportunity for students to absorb living history in an entertaining format that will stay with them long after the written word may have faded away," he said. "Even those who don't fancy themselves fans of history will enjoy the way fact has been woven with song and whimsy resulting in high art and wonderful entertainment. Many people who have lived in St. Marys all their lives came up to me after the show and said, 'I really learned something.'"

Most of the 20 songs performed in River of Life were written by Barbara Ryan and orchestrated by her son, Jerry Lockamy, who was a student of Andre Segovia's last protégé.

"Jerry has added a masterful touch to the words and tunes that carry the stories," Ryan said. "We're confident that audiences will leave inspired with a greater feeling of their connection to history."

The River of Life DVD Screening is free and open to the public. There is no need to reserve ahead of time, but the first 150 people at the door the night of the screening, will be admitted. Theatre by the Trax is located at 1100 Osborne Road in St. Marys. For more information, call 912-729-1103.

St. Marys Little Theatre is a 501c3 organization with a mission to "Enrich Lives through Performance Arts." River of Life is supported by the Georgia Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities and through appropriations from the Georgia General Assembly.

Eye of the Hurricane Preview tickets

If you want to be a part of history, be sure and get your Eye of the Hurricane tickets this weekend.

Eye of the Hurricane will forever be remembered as the first feature film produced in its entirety in Camden County. EOH producers have closed their deal on distribution. Please note that only 5% of all films made each year get distribution, and Eye of the Hurricane distribution is WORLDWIDE! Imagine people all over the world seeing our community through the eyes of gifted filmmakers. I have seen the movie three times, and each time am newly thrilled by the scenery and all the people the we know appearing in the film.

Eye of the Hurricane has had major successess in film filestivals--an often foretelling marker for the public's reception--Four stars in the Florida International Film Festival and recently the highest rated film at the Omaha Film Festival.

It's a busy weekend with Memorial Day festivities and local graduations, but you'll be really happy that you take a couple of hours out of your schedule and come see Eye of the Hurricane at Theatre by the Trax. Bring your guests and the whole family!

Here's the scoop. See you there!

Friday, May 25, Champagne Reception at 6:30. Movie at 7pm Saturday, May 26, Matinee Champagne Reception at 1:30. Movie at 2 pm Saturday Evening Event: Champagne Reception at 6:30. Movie at 7:00 pm Theatre by the Trax, 1100 Osborne Road, St. Marys, GA Admission $15 in advance, $20 at door Tickets at Once Upon a Bookseller and Welcome Center in Downtown St. Marys

ST. MARYS, GA—Hollywood producer Susan Johnson and Director Jesse Wolfe will be the featured guests at the Memorial Day Weekend showings of Eye of the Hurricane, the feature length movie filmed in St. Marys that recently garnered four stars at the Florida International Film Festival. The Reunion Screenings will take place at Theatre by the Trax, 1100 Osborne Road in St. Marys. According to Coastal Georgia Film Alliance (CGFA) Chair, Doug Vaught, many locals have been asking about the release of the movie and are eager to see the finished product.

"CGFA had two showings of the movie before its final edit, and both shows were completely sold out, so a lot of people missed seeing it," Vaught said. "During the recent Film Festival screening in Winter Park, Florida, it was fun to see literally hundreds of Camden County residents in the movie, and we thought a reunion screening would give everyone, including those who were involved in the production, an opportunity to see the final product before its national release this summer." CGFA Vice Chair, Barbara Ryan, concurred.

"It was thrilling seeing so many people I know on the big screen, then to see the credits roll by that listed dozens of St. Marys businesses and families," she said. "This is a St. Marys movie through and through—the beautiful landscapes, the people, the sunsets—even if it is depicting a town in Florida."

Ryan went on to say that viewers of the film will be excited seeing so many local landmarks as the story about post-hurricane family angst unfolds.

Eye of the Hurricane has been described as a "compelling family drama about a small community struggling to put their lives back together in the wake of a devastating hurricane. In the spirit of Stand by Me and To Kill a Mockingbird, Eye of the Hurricane is told through the eyes of a determined child, a troubled adolescent, a wounded parent, and a loyal friend.

Actors Campbell Scott (son of Hollywood icon George C. Scott) and Melanie Lynskey (from Two and a Half Men and Up in the Air) lead the cast that also features Jose Zuniga (numerous screen credits including recent role in Desperate Housewives) and Gregory Cruz (featured in Amazing Grace and recently in Dustin Hoffman's Luck). Bill Murray's brother, Brian Doyle-Murray, plays the crusty dockmaster in scenes that showcase St. Marys waterfront. Of course, for locals, the faces of friends, neighbors, and community leaders will be the stars that pop out when the Memorial Day weekend reunion screenings take place.

Each screening will be preceded by a champagne reception which is also included in the price of admission. Attendees will also have the opportunity to have their mini-poster commemorative ticket autographed by the director and producer.

"The film and television industry has their eye on Camden County right now," Vaught said. "With the recent successes of two major productions—Royal Pains and Oprah's Lovetown USA, the legacy that began with Eye of the Hurricane continues."

CGFA expects a total sellout of tickets (as was the case with previous screenings), so those wishing to attend should get their tickets early.

"The Los Angeles screenings of Eye of the Hurricane are going for $100 or more a ticket," Vaught said. "There's hardly anyone in Camden County who doesn't know at least one person in this movie. It's going to be a fun time and a great way to spend the holiday weekend."

Also on Saturday, May 26, the Art & Music Stroll will take place in Downtown St. Marys.

"The champagne reception and movie screening will be the perfect highlight of an afternoon or evening of local art and music," said Ryan. "This is a rare opportunity to see St. Marys through a whole new set of eyes—a future filled with cultural arts and entertainment often reserved for cities much larger than ours."

Tickets to Eye of the Hurricane Reunion Screenings are $15 in advance and $20 at the door and can be purchased at Once Upon a Bookseller and the Welcome Center in Downtown St. Marys.

Cumberland Island National Seashore News Release: Thanking America's Armed Forces

Cumberland Island National Seashore News Release

Thanking America's Armed Forces
Active Duty U.S. Military Offered Free Entrance to All National Parks For Immediate Release Maggie Tyler 912-882-4336 x 257 Experience Your America The National Park Service cares for special places saved by the American people so that all may experience our heritage.

St.Marys,Georgia – To show our appreciation for those who serve in the U.S.

Military, on May 19 – Armed Forces Day – the National Park Service will

begin issuing an annual pass offering free entrance to all 397 national

parks for active duty military members and their dependents.

"We are proud to recognize these brave men and women and hope that a visit

to Cumberland Island National Seashore or any national park will offer an

opportunity to for them to unwind, relax, rejuvenate, and just have fun

with their families" stated Fred Boyles, Cumberland Island National

Seashore Superintendent.

The Annual National Park Pass, the Senior Pass, the Access Pass, and the

new annual pass for Military members only waives the cost of entrance

fees. Active duty members of the U.S. Military and their dependents can

pick up their pass at the park's visitor center located on the St Marys

waterfront,at 113 St.Marys Street, in St.Marys Georgia . They must show a

current, valid military identification card to obtain their pass. More

information is available at www.nps.gov/findapark/passes.htm.

These passes cover entrance fees only; they do not cover user fees such as

the Cumberland Island Queen ferry fee, camping fees, or additional visitor

fees at other parks.

This military version of the America the Beautiful National Parks and

Federal Recreational Lands Pass also permits free entrance to sites managed

by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, the Bureau of Land Management, the

Bureau of Reclamation, and the U.S. Forest Service. The pass is also

available at these locations.

"Through the years, military members, especially those far from home in

times of conflict, have found inspiration in America's patriotic icons and

majestic landscapes, places like the Statue of Liberty and the Grand Canyon

that are cared for by the National Park Service and symbolize the nation

that their sacrifices protect," said National Park Service Director

Jonathan B. Jarvis. "This new pass is a way to thank military members and

their families for their service and their sacrifices."

National parks and the military have strong ties going back to the

establishment of Yellowstone as the world's first national park in 1872.

The U.S. Cavalry watched over America's national parks and did double duty,

serving as the first park rangers until the National Park Service was

created 44 years later. During World War II, many parks were set aside for

the training and care of military personnel. Today, dozens of national

parks commemorate military battles and achievements.

Cumberland Island is the largest barrier island off the coast of Georgia,

encompassing more than 36,000 acres of maritime forests, salt marsh and

beaches. The island is also home to over 9,800 acres of Congressionally

designated Wilderness. The island's natural and cultural resources provide

a rich and diverse habitat for wildlife and offer a glimpse into the long

history of coastal Georgia. The Seashore is accessible by foot-only,

passenger ferry from the historic community of St. Marys, Georgia and is

celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.

About the National Park Service. More than 20,000 National Park Service

employees care for America's 397 national parks and work with communities

across the nation to help preserve local history and create close-to-home

recreational opportunities. Learn more at www.nps.gov.
