Let's see what Brown's Guide has to say about St. Marys today...

Negotiate favorable rates for extended stay options at this Georgia coast B&B

Photo: The 1870 Goodbread House with pirate.

You can bargain for favorable rates on extended stays at St. Marys Goodbread House bed and breakfast inn. An “extended stay” may be anything from a week, to a month, to a year.

The second oldest continuously inhabited city in the United States (after St. Augustine, Florida), St. Marys has a charming, walkable downtown. The 1870 Victorian-style Goodbread House is a pleasant stroll away from the National Park Service’s Cumberland Island Ferry and several good St. Marys restaurants. It is the southern-most bed and breakfast lodging on the Georgia coast.

The Fantasticks

MEDIA CONTACT: BARBARA RYAN, 912-729-1103, barbara@coastalgeorgiafilm.org

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE…

St. Marys Little Theatre’s Production of “The Fantasticks” Tickets Now On Sale

ST. MARYS, GA—The world’s longest running and most beloved musical, “The Fantasticks,” is being staged in St. Marys in October, and tickets are now on sale.

“There’s a reason that ‘The Fantasticks’ ran for 42 years on Broadway,” said St. Marys Little Theatre (SMLT) director Barbara Ryan. “This landmark musical features some of theatre’s most beautiful songs including the iconic Try to Remember.”

The plot of “The Fantasticks” involves next-door neighbors scheming to make their adolescent children fall in love with each other—in a reverse Romeo and Juliet fashion—by pretending to be blood enemies, forbidding their children to speak to each other, and even building a wall between their properties, following the shrewdly observed philosophy that “to manipulate children, you need merely say no.”

The neighbors are played by theatre veterans Barrett King and Steven Jones, both who appeared in SMLT’s production of Man of La Mancha last year. El Gallo, the narrator and central vocalist, is played by T. J. Stofflet, who played Sancho in Man of La Mancha.

“The cast of ‘The Fantasticks’ is amazing,” said Ryan. “Not only do we have some of the area’s most experienced actors, we are also introducing two extraordinary young talents for the leading roles of Matt and Luisa. (Anthony Colby plays Matt, and Risa Ramsey plays Louisa.)

Other players include Alex Kearns, David Shaw, L. J. Williams, and Laurel Seymour.

Theatre critics say that once you’ve fallen in love with “The Fantasticks,” you can’t grow out of it, because it is all things to all ages. People who see “The Fantasticks” tend to see it again and again. Ryan attributes that to the easy charm and disarming humor that the play embodies.

“‘The Fantasticks’ was performed 17,162 times as a Broadway production,” Ryan said. “If you come to one of St. Marys Little Theatre’s five performances, you’ll discover why.”

Performance dates for “The Fantasticks” are October 12, 13, 19, and 20 at 7 pm, and October 21 at 2 pm. All performances are at Theatre by the Trax, 1100 Osborne Road, St. Marys, Georgia. Tickets are $12 each and can be purchased at St. Marys Welcome Center and Cedar Oak CafĂ© on Osborne Street, and at On the Green Salon and Day Spa at the entrance to Osprey Cove, or by calling 912-729-1103. The War of 1812 and Old Ironsides Remembrance Day

War of 1812 Bicentennial is Celebrated in historic St. Marys, Georgia

ST. MARYS, GA –The city of St. Marys, Georgia has once again stepped forward to honor and commemorate the importance of the War of 1812 by declaring August 19th as “The War of 1812 and Old Ironsides Remembrance Day” through a proclamation signed by Mayor William DeLoughy. Guale Historical Society president, Patrizia Stahle, accepted the signed proclamation at the August 6th St. Marys City Council meeting.

The Guale Historical Society and the Captain James Asbury Tait Chapter of the National Society, United States Daughters of 1812, located in Houston, Texas, have joined together to promote awareness of the war and to preserve the history of the St. Marys Washington Oak trees and their use in the hull of the U.S.S. Constitution in 1797; and, again, in 1987 during the Boston shipyard renovation of “Old Ironsides.”

June 18, 2012 marked the official start of the Bicentennial of the War of 1812, which was fought between the United States and Great Britain. The victory ushered in a heightened sense of patriotism in the United States and inspired Francis Scott Keys’ penning of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

One of the last battles of the War of 1812 was fought at St. Marys’ Point Peter when after the December 1814 signing of the Treaty of Ghent, British Admiral George Cockburn anchored off Cumberland Sound to make his move. At the Cumberland Island National Seashore Museum a separate display room contains a series of displays covering the subject. A portrayal of the conditions leading up to the war and a synopsis of the war are found in this room.

Both the St. Marys Welcome Center and the St. Marys Submarine Museum are currently displaying a six-panel mini-exhibit entitled, War of 1812: A Nation Forged by War that was provided by the National Museum of the United States Navy to interested locations across the United States and Canada. Timed to open with nationwide bicentennial celebrations, the display highlights the prominent role of the U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, and the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service in bringing Great Britain to the negotiating table and forcing European recognition of a truly independent United States. For visitors with smart phones, additional content is available by scanning the QR code on each panel.

The St. Marys Peace Garden, dedicated on July 4th, commemorates the War of 1812 and the shared heritage of the U.S. and Canada.  The garden celebrates 200 years of peace, prosperity and brotherhood and was a joint effort between the St. Marys Earth Keepers and the St. Marys Convention & Visitors Bureau with support from the City of St. Marys, St. Marys Downtown Merchants, Boy Scouts Troop 318, and the St. Marys Garden Club. Our peace garden is the southeastern most point on the Binational Heritage Peace Garden Trail which was created by the Binational Tourism Alliance as an initiative to stimulate cross border tourism from Canada.  Our peace garden designation also led to the joining of St. Marys and Fort Erie, Ontario as peace garden sister cities.

For information about these War of 1812 offerings, and more, contact the St. Marys Convention & Visitors Bureau at 912-882-4000 or info@stmaryswelcome.com.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE…

ST. MARYS LITTLE THEATRE ANNOUNCES

PERFORMING ARTS COMPETITION TEAM OPPORTUNITY

AUDITIONS AUGUST 18

10 AM TO 12 NOON

At LISA ALLEN’S DANCEWORKS

ST. MARYS, GA—Camden’s leading performance arts studios are collaborating to build a performing arts competition team to represent Coastal Georgia in the prestigious “Access Broadway” competition to be held in 2013 in Orlando.

Lisa Allen’s Danceworks, The Friese Studio of Music, and Dina Barone’s Vocal Studio have teamed up to give area talent an opportunity to perform in a regional arena that could lead to national recognition.

The “Encore Performing Arts Competition Team” will represent Camden County with actors, singers, dancers and some entries could be combinations of all three. According to Barbara Ryan, director of the St. Marys Little Theatre, this is exactly the kind of program that can place Southeast Georgia at the forefront in the area of arts education and performance.

“The collaboration of Lisa Allen, Megan Friese, and Dina Barone is a clear example of the old adage of  ‘the total being greater than the sum of its parts,’” said Ryan. “These three women would be considered at the top of their field in any size market, but to have such dedicated, talented performing arts leaders all in one area is truly a gift.”

Ryan went on to say that the trio’s recent collaboration of Camden’s “Love Disney” Summer Camp was an amazing success, and she expects some of the camp’s participants to win a place on the Encore Performing Arts Competition Team.

In order to be a member of the Encore team, you must audition and be enrolled this fall semester in either music and/or dance studio taking private or group classes in dance, music theatre, acting

and/or singing. The competition is open to all ages—children and adults.

Group classes are available at Lisa Allen's Danceworks and the Friese Studio of Music.  Private lessons are available at all three studios. The team practice will be on future determined Saturdays throughout the school year.

Barone, Friese, and Allen agree that “Encore is a wonderful opportunity for students to learn more about the performing arts and learn team building skills which will carry them throughout their lifetime.”

Ryan said, “Numerous attendees have started their professional careers through this innovative program which proudly features constructive and diverse talent competitions, performing arts education and professional opportunities.”

Parents and students should plan to be at the auditions on August 18 for the entire 2 hours (10 am to noon) as details about the team will be discussed once all interested students have completed the audition. Auditions will be held at Lisa Allen Danceworks, 10880 Colerain Road, St. Marys, Georgia.

Cumberland Island NS News Release: Cumberland Island NS Completes Reserved Properties Plan

Cumberland Island National Seashore News Release
|---------------------------------------------------------------------------------|

July 31, 2012
For Immediate Release
Fred Boyles 912-882-4336 x. 227

CUMBERLAND ISLAND NATIONAL SEASHORE COMPLETES RESERVED PROPERTIES PLAN

St. Marys, Georgia: The National Park Service is pleased to announce a final decision in the Former Reserved Properties Management Plan (FRPMP) for Cumberland Island National Seashore. The decision document is a Finding of No Significant Impact or FONSI for the Environmental Assessment that was completed along with the plan.

The plan provides guidance for the park with respect to the future disposition and/or function of seven tracts and their associated structures that were acquired when Retained Rights agreements expired, primarily in
2010 and 2011. The plan calls for the removal of all of the structures on three tracts so those sites can revert to natural conditions, including one of which is located in designated wilderness. Three other properties will be converted to housing for park employees, volunteers and/or cooperators.
And finally, the historic structure known as The Grange, will be dedicated primarily to interpretation and visitor education. The Grange is located in the Dungeness Historic District, a primary visitor destination on the island. The full details of the plan and the FONSI are available at the following web site – http://parkplanning.nps.gov/cuis. Hard copies of the FONSI will also be available for review at the Cumberland Island Visitor Center on the waterfront in St. Marys, as well as the NPS Headquarters in the Bachlott House, 101 Wheeler Street, St. Marys, Georgia.

Four "retained rights" agreements for use and occupancy of properties located on Cumberland Island National Seashore expired between September
2010 and May 2011, with a fifth having previously expired in 2000. Use and occupancy was limited to noncommercial residential purposes. The agreements were established with previous property owners as a condition of acquisition by the federal government, and had terms of between 25-40 years. Upon expiration of the agreements the properties went to full
management by the NPS. In addition to the expired properties there are 12
other reserve agreements that are still active on the island. They are "life estates" extending through the lifetime of the owner and/or their descendants.

Public review of the FRPMP and Environmental Assessment was conducted between July 11 and August 12, 2011, and resulted in over 2,200 comments.
The majority of those comments were in favor of the National Park Service
preferred alternative. In accordance with Section 106 of the National
Historic Preservation Act, the Georgia State Historic Preservation Office has concurred with the NPS assessment that the proposed plan will have no adverse effect to historic properties.

The FONSI allows the National Park Service to proceed with planning for implementation of the various reuse options to include further compliance, funding requests and exploring how best to execute the plans for each structure to include future partnerships to meet the goals of the plan.
"The release of this plan is an important step towards achieving a long term vision that the Island would be preserved in a primitive state and that it will provide for park visitor recreation and educational services for the public," stated Fred Boyles, Park Superintendent of the National Seashore, "We also want to ensure that this plan provides a way forward for dealing with other retained rights properties as they expire in the future."

Cumberland Island is the largest barrier island off the coast of Georgia, encompassing more than 36,000 acres of maritime forests, salt marsh and beaches. The island is also home to over 9,800 acres of Congressionally designated Wilderness. The island's natural and cultural resources provide a rich and diverse habitat for wildlife and offer a glimpse into the long history of coastal Georgia. The Seashore is accessible by pedestrian-only, passenger ferry from the historic community of St. Marys, Georgia and is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year in 2012.
