To sign up for the "Most Romantic Dessert" contest (sponsored by LoveTownUSA and the Downtown Merchants Association), email romanticdesserts@gmail.com. Desserts should be brought to the designated area at the Gilman Waterfront Park between 12:00 and 1:00 on February 18th. Judging will begin at 1:00. Individuals, businesses and restaurants are encouraged to enter.

Celebrity matchmakers from the OWN Network's LovetownUSA series that will air this summer will serve as grand marshals of the parade that begins at 10:00 a.m. in Downtown St. Marys. The grand marshals will ride on a LoveTownUSA-themed float. After the parade, attendees can browse more than 100 arts, crafts, and food vendors; partake in the Chili Cook-off, Pet Parade, and Most Romantic Dessert Contest, and enjoy two stages of entertainment throughout the afternoon.

When the sun goes down, and the lights come up, festivities continue at the annual Mardi Gras Ball to be held at Southern Junction. A new king and queen will be chosen at the ball in the tradition of New Orleans' grandest balls, and the Rosie Kelly award for community service will be presented.
The St. Marys' War of 1812 commemoration will kick off at the festival with costumed re-enactors marching in the parade and events enacted at Orange Hall to include:

• Silver Wind Ensemble: 3 flautists playing classical music of the period
• A Soldier's Life: Life in the military during the War of 1812
• Point Peter Diorama: A discussion of the last battles of the War of 1812
• Slave songs, spirituals and songs of the period
• Women of the Times: The Plantation owner's wife, a school teacher and a slave discuss their lives in Camden County in 1812
• A One-room Schoolhouse: Presented by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR); See what a student was taught in 1812
• Plein-Air Artists: Period scenes being painted at the Clark Customs House and the display of their work at the St. Marys Welcome Center. Models and scenes provided by The Crooked River Players
• The Spirit of 1812 Quilt Raffle: Drawing will be held at 3:00pm
• Tri-corner Hat Making: Children can decorate and wear replicas of military hats

Some of you might remember Charlie Smith, a Democrat and House member from St. Marys, who served as Gov. Roy Barnes’ floor leader a number of years back.

We miss him, and fear for his health.

Clearly infected by Mitt Romney, Smith has recently succumbed to venture capitalism. He has ventured to submit a $34 million bill to Queen Elizabeth II and David Cameron, the man in charge of her government, for a 197-year-old case of vandalism.

From the letter that Smith sent to the pair, via Federal Express:

You may be aware that preparations are underway in some corners of this country to celebrate the bicentennial of that encounter we Americans call the War of 1812. While it was seen here by some of the old timers as our second war of independence, we know that the gist of the dispute was actually our trading with the French during your war with them. Times have changed, and many in our community would be happy to support you in future disputes with that nation.

Others have noted that after declaring war, we never actually invaded England, but instead attacked Canada and various Indian tribes, resulting in hard feelings all around. The time has come to put those feelings to rest….

[T]o help heal some of the old wounds that still exist in St. Marys, it would be good of you to examine your records concerning a brutal English attack on our fair town. You will recall that we had all forgotten what we were fighting about, following your decisive defeat of Napoleon in 1814.

But on January 13, 1815, well after the time our peace treaty had been signed, your Captain Charles Ross, commanding HMS Albion and two bomb ships, HMS Terror and HMS Devastation, supported by Royal Marines, landed unopposed to occupy St. Marys. Your countrymen caused substantial damage while here….

You will surely be most embarrassed to learn that the damage to St. Marys was never repaid, and considering our warm relations over these many years (not to mention that we now have a fleet ballistic missile submarine base), your government will likely to rush to offer compensation upon learning of this sordid tale….

[W]ith your indulgence, I propose the following arrangement: Let us discount the estimate of damage by 80%, and agree on an original amount of $100,000 US. At a very conservative interest rate of 3% compounded annually, and accounting for the passage of 197 years from the time of the damage, a fair settlement would seem to be in the neighborhood of $34 million US, which should be made payable to the City of St. Marys, Georgia.

While I do not represent the City of St. Marys, and would never consider accepting a fee for services in pointing out the moral obligation of your honorable nation to right this terrible injustice, I would be happy to coordinate the presentation of your government’s check to our mayor and council, some of whom I have on occasion supported…

It would be particularly good of you to send a member or two of the royal family, and I would be happy to travel to London and serve as personal escort….

Story Telling & Music at Captain Stan's in Woodbine - February 5th

Do you love a great story? And great music? This Sunday (February 5), you can be treated to both as the "Unchained Tour" of world-celebrated raconteurs and brilliant musicians arrive at Captain Stan's in Woodbine for an afternoon of captivating entertainment.

From 2:00 to 3:30, performers including playwright Edgar Oliver, star of the Edinburgh Festival and Peter Aguero, host of "The Moth" and leader of NYC's improvised storytelling rock band "The Btk Bank," plus novelists, comedians, a "sloppy tonk" bank from Charleston, and an impressive lineup of colorful characters that will make you chuckle, guffaw, and maybe shed a tear or two.

Media Update For Week of January 24, 2012

Kingsland, Georgia has been selected by the Oprah Winfrey Network as the setting for a new original series to premiere later this year, Lovetown, USA.

After a nationwide search, OWN and BBC Worldwide Productions have selected Kingsland, Georgia to be transformed into "Lovetown, USA." Two expert matchmakers including the real-life "Hitch," Paul Carrick Brunson, and Kailen Rosenberg, with over 200 successful marriages to her name and hailed as a true "love whisperer," will take over Kingsland for 30 days helping eight singles embark on a journey to find true love in their own backyard. From the local mayor to restaurateurs, bosses and even married couples, everyone in the town will be involved. This one-of-a-kind social experiment is the biggest dating challenge in TV history; examining the effects love can have on the DNA of one American community. The show is produced by BBC Worldwide Productions for OWN. Bruce Toms is executive producer. Izzie Pick Ashcroft, Rob Bagshaw and Jane Tranter are executive producers for BBC Worldwide Productions. They visited many locations during a very short period of time and were even able to work in a tech scout trip to Cumberland Island. The Lovetown team returned to LA on Tuesday afternoon, where they will continue the task of pre-production. We look forward to their next visit at the beginning of February, where they will begin moving the entire production team into town for 6weeks!!

2012 guide unveiled at annual Tourism and Hospitality Day event

Gov. Nathan Deal joined Georgia’s tourism and hospitality industry today for the annual Tourism & Hospitality Day at the state Capitol to highlight the important role tourism plays in Georgia’s economy. Representatives from the tourism industry presented Deal with a check representing $1.185 billion in state tax revenue generated from tourism-related expenditures in 2010.

“The tourism industry is a huge economic engine for the state of Georgia,” said Deal. “The more than 391,000 Georgians employed by the industry are an integral part of Georgia’s economy.”

Deal also unveiled the new 2012 annual Georgia Travel Guide. This full-color, magazine-size guide features Georgia’s own Lady Antebellum on the cover photographed at Evans Town Center Park in Columbia County. The guide provides visitors with information on Georgia’s tourism assets including trip ideas, attractions, accommodations, events and more. 750,000 guides are distributed through the state’s 11 Visitor Information Centers, www.ExploreGeorgia.org, travel and trade shows and 1-800-VISIT GA. The Georgia Department of Economic Development partnered with Emmis Custom Publishing (publisher of Atlanta Magazine) on the state’s official travel guide.

“Domestic and international visitors spent $21 billion in Georgia in 2010, an 8.3 percent increase from 2009. This increase in visitor spending contributed $2.4 billion in state and local tax revenue in our state,” said Kevin Langston, deputy commissioner for tourism for the Georgia Department of Economic Development. “Georgia was also the fourth fastest-growing destination in the United States for international travelers, with a 19 percent increase.”

The Georgia Tourism division markets Georgia as a premier travel and tourism destination in order to increase visitation and create jobs. The state is also launching a new tourism campaign “The South With A Twist.” The campaign highlights authentic experiences through bold and bright photography evoking a contemporary and modern feel. The new campaign can also been seen on ExploreGeorgia.org. The state’s tourism website had a 30 percent increase in website traffic, totaling more than 1.5 million visits in 2011. Our international efforts have helped us to achieve record numbers with more than 112 international tour operators carrying Georgia tourism product in the top-producing countries for inbound travel. The product development team and regional tourism representatives assisted 777 communities statewide to enhance their tourism product. Georgia’s Visitor Information Centers also served 12 million travelers last year and booked more than 30,000 room nights in Georgia hotels.

The Drifters will now perform at 6:00 pm on Saturday, February 4th and again at 8 pm. The Drifters to Perform at Theatre by the Trax February 4 Additional 6 pm Show Scheduled

ST. MARYS, GA—The legendary music that inspired Rolling Stone Magazine to name The Drifters #81 on their list of the "100 Greatest Artists of All Times" is coming to St. Marys February 4.

Bill Pinkney's Original Drifters will be bringing back some of baby boomers' greatest memories with hits like Under the Boardwalk, This Magic Moment, Up on the Roof, On Broadway, and Save the Last Dance for me at the Theatre by the Trax.

The Drifters originally formed in 1953 and achieved 13 chart hits during their career, writing and performing doo-wop and blues all over the world.
Doug and Jeanne Vaught, proprietors of Theatre by the Trax, are planning a series of "Star Spectaculars" that will feature some of the music industry's most beloved performers. They felt that launching the series with The Drifters would set the perfect tone for future concerts.

"The Drifters are legendary," said Doug Vaught. "Their music is a blend of nostalgic magic and on-stage excitement that few new artists can lay claim to."
Vaught was referring to the showmanship for which groups like The Drifters are famous.

"It's not just the music that will have the audience on their feet," continued Vaught. "It's the show they put on that is absolutely electrifying. Audiences will quickly remember why their music is now part of the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame."

Dr. Roy'z Magical Musical Time Machine is the opening act for the February 4th concert, a great choice to get the audience thinking "oldies but goodies," Vaught said.

Rail-Trail project expands through Woodbine

Woodbine, Ga. (January 12, 2012) – The County's Public Works department began construction last week with the City of Woodbine on their bike trail project, which is the second component of the Georgia Coast Rail-Trail project in Camden County. This section of the bike path will add an additional 1.5 miles to the trail and is expected to be open by early Spring 2012. The trail is being constructed along the old railroad bed south of the current trail in Woodbine. Public Works is able to recover railroad rock from this project which will be used to offset and cover the costs of the County's participation in order to make this a budget neutral event as approved by the Board of County Commissioners.

In June 2010, the first 3.5 miles section opened to the public in White Oak, Georgia. The project was made possible by a public-private partnership between the PATH Foundation, Coastal Georgia Rails-to-Trails, Camden County's Public Work Department, and the Public Service Authority. Camden County and the PATH Foundation were awarded the 2011 Public-Private Partnership of the Year award presented by the Association of County Commissioners of Georgia for the Coastal Georgia Rail-Trail section in White Oak.

Attention Local Artists: The Blue Goose, the new wine, coffee and gift shoppe in historic St. Marys (on corner of Osborne and Bryant) loves to support the arts and is having their first ever Local Artists Weekend on Saturday, January 28th and Sunday, January 29th.
There is no cost to artists for this first-time event and we are limiting it to only six artists.

We would like to have our spots filled by this Thursday (Dec. 22nd) to promote this event. So be quick! Cumberland Island National Seashore Announces New Christmas Ornament and Winter Hours

St Marys, GA- Cumberland Island National Seashore announced its winter schedule today for the visitor center, ferry operations, and the popular Lands and Legacies tour. The winter schedule will remain in effect until February 28, 2012.

The ferry service to Cumberland Island which is operated by Lang's Seafood Inc. will continue to make two trips from St Marys at 9:00 am and 11:45 am Thursday through Monday. Return trips from Cumberland Island also occur Thursday through Monday at 10:15 a.m. and 4:45 p.m. From December 1 through February 28 there is no public ferry service to the island on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Land and Legacies tour continues to operate at full capacity most days.
Starting in January and through February, the tour will not be offered on Tuesday and Wednesday as there is no ferry service to the island those days.

As with most services to the island, visitors are encouraged to make reservations up to six months in advance for ferry trips, camping and the Lands and Legacies trip by calling the reservation line Monday through Friday 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. at 912-882-4335 or 1-877-860-6787.

The Cumberland Island National Seashore Visitor Center located in downtown St. Marys is open daily 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

During the holidays our visitor facilities will observe the following operating hours:
December 24-- the ferry will operate on a normal schedule; the visitor center will close at 1:30 p.m. December 25-- all visitor faculties are closed including ferry operations. December 31-- the ferry will operate on a normal schedule; the visitor center will close at 1:30 p.m.

You can also celebrate the holidays by taking home a Cumberland Island National Seashore ornament. This year's ornament features the First African Baptist Church and is the third in a series highlighting historic buildings on the island. The other two ornaments are of Plum Orchard and Dungeness Mansion. The ornaments sell for $15.95 and can be purchased at the Cumberland Island National Seashore Visitor Center.

Georgia Tourism’s holiday promotion makes a stop in historic St. Marys

What: The state’s official holiday campaign is making a stop in St. Marys, Georgia to attend the December 10th Christmas Tour of Homes! The home tour runs from 5:00 PM – 9:00 PM but come out and take your picture with Izo the traveling snowman at the St. Marys Welcome Center before the tour. He’ll be at the welcome center from 8:30 AM – 7:00 PM on Saturday. Visitors are encouraged to takes pictures with Izo and post them to his photo album on Facebook and Twitter.

Who: Izo is a snowman from up North who has traveled to Georgia in search of a more temperate climate and authentic holiday experiences. Also included on the tour will be Orange Hall, a circa 1829 Greek revival mansion, which was recently listed on the Georgia Trust's "Places in Peril" list, along with the Bachlott House, a circa 1911 home which now houses the administrative offices of Cumberland Island Seashore, and the St. Marys Submarine Museum, where the legacy of submarine service lives on.

Each uniquely ornamented location on the tour will warm your heart to the holidays and have your mind swimming with ideas to deck out your own home or business. You'll experience the charm of an authentic southern town that is all alight for the holidays.

Entertainment will be available throughout the event from church choirs and vocal groups who will be caroling at various venues along the tour route. There will be a free 6:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. special performance in the St. Marys Waterfront Park, provided by a local Christian band, "IGNITE." This popular group has performed at various events throughout the area. Concert-goers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets and enjoy the uplifting music provided by this talented group of musicians.

Attendees should plan on driving on this tour but can take advantage of a bus that will be available along the path, as well.

"It begins with little Susie Anderson who lives in St. Marys and has lost her belief in Santa," Ryan said. "But before the show is over, she is inspired to believe, as will the entire audience."

Audiences can expect special effects at the same level of quality as they enjoyed in Man of La Mancha, the Theatre's premiere production. Joe and Terra Lucent, producers of 'Twas the Night Before Christmas, wanted to give the community an opportunity to share the joy of the holiday with a message of hope and love.

"We've mixed traditional songs with contemporary music and threaded it all with a story that will stir the hearts of everyone," Terra said. "My husband and I love Christmas. It really is the most wonderful time of the year, and it will be even more special this year as we endeavor to enrich the community's experience of the holidays with this beautiful production."

St. Marys Little Theatre chair, Barbara Ryan, said the evening is all about celebrating the simpler times when rock ‘n’ roll was in its infancy and artists like Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper were changing the cultural landscape of America.

“In the midst of today’s hectic pace, we’ve all yearned for a time of innocence when life was an adventure without the pressures of advanced technology,” Ryan said. “Dancing to the Oldies is the perfect venue to step back into a world of optimism and dreams.”

The evening will feature a retro dinner, silent auction, souvenir photos, and a few surprises, according to Ryan.

“Borrell Creek Landing with its retreat-like setting over the marsh is the perfect place to immerse into an evening of yesteryear,” Ryan said.

Legends and Local Spirits Share Their Tales

ST. MARYS, GA (October 6, 2011) – The St. Marys Downtown Merchants’ Association presents the 3^rd Annual Haunted History Tour on Friday, October 28, 2011 from 6pm - 9pm in downtown St. Marys.

For a fun and educational Halloween activity, this downtown event can’t be beat. Blending legends with authentic historical events, professional and amateur storytellers will hold court at ten noteworthy St. Marys sites. Each presenter will be fully costumed to reflect their respective time periods. This year’s cast and locations include a few favorites from prior tours mixed in with chilling new acts. Some hot-spots will feature details from actual paranormal investigations done by the Southern Paranormal Research Society.

Throughout the historic district, guests will be amused by lore such as that of Sam, a faithful servant at Orange Hall, who has lots of points he’d like the living to be aware of. The spirit of Charles Gilman, at the Gilman Boat House, will share his enjoyment of the past and his hope for the future. The evening would not be complete without an ethereal visit from our beloved Resurrection Angel and she’s eager to speak from beyond once again.

Included sites in the 2011 tour are Oak Grove Cemetery, the Memory Garden Gazebo, St. Marys Submarine Museum, Riverview Hotel, the sailing vessel Dream at the Waterfront Pavilion Dock, Gilman Boathouse, Goodbread House, St. Marys Film Museum, Archibald Clark House, and Orange Hall.

“The DMA is always proud to host events that assist in bringing people downtown to enjoy the area. The planning committee was excited to have partnered with the SPRS to produce some stories relating to the “haunted” history of St. Marys,”said DMA’s president, Jolene Haney.

The tour will begin at 6pm and suggested starting points are Orange Hall or Oak Grove Cemetery. Golf carts will be utilized as courtesy shuttles for those needing assistance navigating the tour route.

Prices are $8 in advance and $10 on the day of the event. Special group rates are available for groups of 20 or more guests. Tickets are available now and may be purchased at the St. Marys Welcome Center until 7pm the night of the event or at Once Upon A Bookseller until 6pm the night of the event. ST. MARYS, GA (September 20, 2011) – The 2^nd Annual Sand Gnat BBQ Challenge is set for 10:00a.m.-4:00p.m., Saturday, October 15, 2011 and will be located in the Tribune & Georgian parking lot in downtown St. Marys.

The program is sponsored by the St. Marys Convention & Visitors Bureau as a fundraising event to assist in the support of tourism efforts. The day will include the judging of teams for the titles of “Pitmaster” and “People’s Choice” award and winners will receive various prizes for their efforts. There will be entertainment options and shopping opportunities with several local arts & crafts vendors throughout the day.

For a $5 tasting fee, guests can sample BBQ from each team vying for bragging rights and place their vote for the people’s choice award winner. This is a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon with your friends and family while visiting the St. Marys historic downtown area.

CALLING FOR TEAM ENTRIES & VENDORS: BBQ Teams and Arts & Craft Vendors are being sought for the event. If you think you are king of the grill, this is the event for you to come out and earn your BBQ bragging rights. Teams can choose to be judged in any of four categories and a team of judges will declare the ultimate winner as, pitmaster. The registration fee is only $40 per cooking team or arts & crafts vendor. Rick Wiebush (Cross Currents Sea Kayaking) and Tom Nickles (Riverwind Kayak) will be conducting the course, which will take place from Wednesday Oct. 12 through Sunday Oct. 16, 2011. This is a great opportunity for those who have considered becoming an instructor or for those who just want to ramp up their skills. You will have top-notch trainers delivering the comprehensive and proven ACA instructor training curriculum. The St. Mary’s area is a dynamic paddling and learning environment since it offers multiple types of venues e.g., rivers, bays and open ocean. And the air and water temperatures are perfect in mid-October.

This course is intended for those wishing to become certified as ACA Level 1, 2 or 3 instructors. The course is either 3-days (for L1 and 2) or 5 days (for L3).

ACA Instructor Certification is a two-part process: the Instructor Development Workshop (IDW) and the Instructor Certification Exam (ICE). In the IDW portion of the course, the trainers: 1) help fine tune the candidates’ personal skills; and 2) explain and demonstrate effective methods for teaching those skills. The candidates are then given multiple opportunities over several days to practice their teaching skills. The final day is devoted to the formal evaluation of skills (ICE). Certification is based upon both paddling and teaching skills and is not guaranteed.

The St. Marys Little Theatre will be offering a program for children ages 8 through the 12th grade in the near future. The program will be conducted by Josh Sinyard of Encore Kids, an organization that has been offering this program in Glynn County.

The cornerstone of Encore kids is to provide an environment where young actors can experience the magic of live theater and help them develop the power of concentration, improve thinking processes, encourage spontaneous expression, and develop self-confidence. AND HAVE FUN. The group will meet once a week for 2 hours in downtown St. Marys. The classes will be broken down into 30 minutes of acting, singing, movement, and improvisation.

Encore Kids of Camden County will perform 2 shows a year. A Christmas show and a Spring Show.
The cost is $85 dollars a month, plus an $85 registration fee. The $85 registration fee will be applied to the last month's tuition so no payment will be due in May.
The program will follow the Camden County School Calendar. If school is out, so is Encore Kids.

In keeping with the theme of the play, citizens will be asked to report all incidents of "valor, kindness, and nobility" that can be featured in the local press.

"I hope to add some measure of grace to the world," the play's title character, Don Quixote, says in explanation of why he does the things he does—giving when it's natural to take, battering at walls that won't break, and reaching for an unreachable star. As the play retells the story of Don Quixote's quest for truth and valor, beautiful songs emerge that touch the heart and soul of those inclined to hope for a better world. According to St. Marys Little Theatre Chair and Director of Man of La Mancha Barbara Ryan, when the final song, "Impossible Dream," is sung by the entire cast, "there will be no dry eyes in the audience."

Ryan said that the story, the venue, and the talents of the actors all add up to equal a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. The venue for "Man of La Mancha" is as impressive as the play itself. Once slated to be demolished, the old St. Marys Railroad Building is being transformed into a prison during the time of the Inquisition. Ryan praised the cast of La Mancha for their professional voices as well as their dramatic and comedic abilities.

"Few plays stir emotions as powerfully as La Mancha does," Ryan said. "It was important for us that we launch our theatre with a show-stopping performance, and I can't think of any play more rousing or more challenging than 'Man of La Mancha.'"

"I think people forget how funny this show is," Ryan said. "Don Quixote is a madman. Sancho, his sidekick, is hilarious, and even the housekeeper—played by a local Navy base chaplain—will have the audience rocking with laughter."

Don Quixote is played by Bill Raser whose voice is as distinguished as his lengthy acting bio. His co-star, Whitney Sanzero, plays Aldonza aka Dulcinea to whom Don Quixote dedicates all his knightly good deeds. Sanzero's operatic voice is the perfect tool with which to paint her view of the world—"The world's a dung heap, and we are maggots who crawl on it"—a view that is in direct contrast to Quixote's beliefs. But in the end, Aldonza, along with the other 20 hard-core prisoners, is transformed by the mad knight's quest to make the world a better place.

"Audiences will be entranced with the tapestry of fantasy, romance, fun, and thrilling drama," Ryan said. "And they will be reminded that there is good in this world and dreams come true if we continue to dream even of the impossible dream."

9^th Annual Ralph J. Bunche Classic to be played September 10, 2011

Golf Tournament at Laurel Island Links on Morning of Game

St. Marys, GA—The Camden County Re-Entry Program, along with Ralph J. Bunche Classic organizers, will sponsor a Classic Golf Tournament at Laurel Island Links in Kingsland, Georgia, as part of the event lineup for the Ralph J. Bunche Classic September 10.

Before the Tigers and Dragons come head to head at Camden County High School’s Chris Gilman Stadium at 3 pm, local and regional golf enthusiasts will have their own competition on the greens and on the fairways. Laurel Island Links, a favorite venue for tournament participants, offers challenging play on a course that meanders around the marsh’s edge serving up stunning vistas of nature and wildlife.

L. J. Williams, event chair, said that the golf tournament is a natural highlight of the Classic festivities.

“The golf tournament is always a popular event for the Classic,” Williams said. “It gives athletes of all ages the opportunity to exhibit their skills and help out a good cause at the same time.”

This year’s Classic pays tribute to firefighters and the military, recognizing their sacrifices and contributions throughout history. Williams said that the theme of “America’s Heroes” is especially meaningful on two levels.

“On the eve of September 11, people all over our country will be thinking about that horrific day ten years ago when so many of America’s heroes lost their lives trying to save others,” Williams said. “At the same time, we’re giving thanks everyday to the brave firefighters who continue to battle the fires that have ravaged our area recently.”

Williams went on to say that by honoring military families, military vets and firefighters and their families, the Ralph J. Bunche Classic continues a legacy of giving back that began nine years ago.

Robert Cummings, Director of the Camden County Re-entry Program and one of the event organizers, said the Classic is expected to draw more than 200 firefighters and 500 military personnel and families as well as local and state law enforcement agencies.

“We invite the entire community to become involved and show their support of the great men and women of America who are the true heroes of our times,” Cummings said.

The community can become involved through sponsorships and/or by purchasing tickets to Classic Events. General admission to the game is $10 in advance, $12 on game day and for children/students $5 in advance and $7 on game day. Family packages are also available, and groups of 20 are eligible for a discount.

A portion of the proceeds will go to firefighting organizations and the USO.

The public is invited to attend the 10^th Anniversary Re-dedication ceremony of the Howard Gilman Memorial Park and the plaque dedication for the waterfront amphitheater at 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 6, 2011.

There will be brief remarks by St. Marys’ Mayor Bill DeLoughy in honor of the park and those who helped the project come to fruition. CUMBERLAND ISLAND NATIONAL SEASHORE ANNOUNCES THE START OF THE LANDS AND LEGACIES TOURS

On August 11th the National Park Service will begin providing guided, interpretive tours of Cumberland Island National Seashore. Visitors will be able to travel via passenger van and open air tram to historic locations around the Seashore, including Plum Orchard Mansion, the Settlement (including the First African Baptist Church) Cumberland Island Wharf, and other sites along the main road. Tours will be offered daily.

“We are excited to start these tours,” said Fred Boyles, Superintendent of Cumberland Island National Seashore. “Many features of the Island that are rarely seen by visitors will be more easily reached. Our goal is to build a new appreciation among the public for the natural beauty and rich historic resources that are Cumberland Island.”

Those planning to take the tour can make reservations by calling

912-882-4335 Monday through Friday 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Reservations are strongly encouraged as the number of visitors that can be accommodated on a daily basis is limited. Tours will operate rain or shine but may be canceled due to extreme conditions on the island. Visitors can also make ferry reservations by calling the ferry reservation office at the same number listed above.

Tours will not be offered on Christmas Day, scheduled hunt days, or Tuesdays and Wednesdays from December 1 through February 28. The charge for the tour will be $15.00 per person with a reduced fee of $12.00 for seniors over the age of 62 and for children under 16. This fee is in addition to the standard park entrance fee of $4.00 per person and the ferry fee of $20.00 for adults, $18.00 for those over 65 and $14.00 for children 12 and under.

Tours will leave from the Sea Camp Visitor Center just after the ferry arrives at 9:45 a.m. and will last approximately six hours. This is expected to be a physically demanding, arduous trip and visitors should plan accordingly. Visitors will need to bring provisions such as food and water and may bring one small personal bag or pack. Space on the tours is limited and large camera bags, tripods, hard sided coolers or large backpacks will not be permitted. There are limited restrooms and water stops along the tour route. There will be a short break for a picnic lunch. Hikers and campers will not be permitted to use the vans as a shuttle to access additional areas in the seashore.

Although this is a motorized tour conducted by National Park Service personnel, visitors should understand that it takes place in a difficult outdoor environment and should be prepared. Sunscreen and bug spray are highly encouraged along with comfortable hiking clothes. A handicap accessible van is available for those visitors with special needs.

In addition to the lands and legacies tour, a south end shuttle will operate between the Dungeness Dock and the Sea Camp area. This is a drop on/ drop off shuttle and is intended to help visitors traverse the difficult area.

Federal legislation passed in 2004 requires a minimum of five tours and am minimum of eight tours daily to the north end of the Island. After completing a Transportation Management Plan and required environmental compliance resulting in a Finding of No Significant impact in May 2009, the park was cleared to start the tours. Lack of funding to support the full initiative prompted the park to seek permission to pursue a more modest proposal for a limited time to assess the effectiveness of the program.

Small Wildfire on Cumberland Island National Seashore Quickly Contained

St Marys, Georgia: On July 29, 2011, just after 4:00 p.m. Camden County
911 received a call reporting a fire on the south end of Cumberland Island.
Cumberland Island National Seashore officials were notified and dispatched to confirm the location and size of the fire. Upon arrival two Park Rangers found a small fire burning in mixed vegetation including cedar, pine, palmetto, and grasses. A private citizen was on scene and attempting to suppress the fire. During the investigation, park rangers and fire management officials determined that a lightning strike ignited the small fire on the south end of Cumberland Island.

"We appreciate the quick calls by local citizens to help locate the fire; however, we always want the public to remain safe," said Cumberland Island National Seashore Superintendent Fred Boyles. "Once placing the call to 911, the public should then wait for firefighters to arrive rather than trying to control the fire themselves."

"Fire in the ecosystem supports habitat diversity," continued Superintendent Boyles. "There are many species of plants including the Long Leaf Pine and other maritime ecosystem vegetation that require fire for general health and seed dispersal." Cumberland Island currently manages fire within the guidelines of the 2004 Fire Management Plan.

The Tortoise fire was contained to one quarter acre and was monitored through the night. High humidity, calm winds, and quick initial action by responding Park Service personnel contained the fire and ensured it remained under control. Additional resources consisting of two engine crews were requested from the Honey Prairie Fire Complex at the Okefenokee Swamp National Wildlife Refuge and they arrived on scene Saturday morning.
They worked through the day performing additional containment and mop up operations. By Sunday night, the fire was 100% contained. Park service personnel continued working the fire and called the fire controlled on Monday afternoon. The fire is now considered to be "in monitor" status and will be checked periodically by fire staff.

The Tortoise fire is the second lightning strike fire on Cumberland Island this year. The Dune fire, also caused by lightning, started 6/7/11 and was also quickly contained to one quarter acre.

WITH ANNUAL SOUTHEAST TOURISM SOCIETY PROGRAM ON GEORGIA CAMPUS

St. Marys, Georgia (August 3, 2011) -- Angela Wigger, Director of Tourism, for the St. Marys Convention & Visitors Bureau has completed the first portion of a three-year professional development program that will lead to certification as a Tourism Marketing Professional (TMP).

Wigger was one of 232 tourism professionals enrolled at the Southeast Tourism Society Marketing College last month. The week-long program turns the facilities of North Georgia College and State University in Dahlonega, Ga., into a laboratory to teach tourism marketing each summer. There is no other professional development program like STS Marketing College, and it is recognized nationally for its training of tourism leaders. 626 people have earned TMP certification.

“In the tourism industry, TMP certification carries a lot of weight,” said Bill Hardman, president and CEO of the Southeast Tourism Society, a 12-state organization that promotes travel and tourism in the Southeast. Tourism ranks as the first-, second- or third-largest industry in each STS member state. Visitors in Georgia contributed $25 billion in expenditures last year and 790 tourism related jobs exist in Camden County.

The curriculum covers topics such as branding, social media, and packaging. “The fundamental concept of STS Marketing College is that the curriculum is practical. What students learn can be put to practice as soon as they get back to their workplaces,” Hardman said. Twenty-four senior executives in the travel and tourism industry were the volunteer faculty. The program attracts students from throughout the Southeast and occasionally from other states. This year’s program included students from Maryland and Oklahoma.

“Southeast Tourism Society is recognized nationwide for the cohesiveness and camaraderie it fosters in the region. No other region in the U.S. has a similar organization. STS Marketing College is a major project to build skills and professionalism in the tourism industry,” Hardman said.

Southeast Tourism Society, created in 1983, is headquartered in Atlanta and has approximately 800 members who represent travel industry businesses, state tourism departments, chambers of commerce, convention and visitors bureaus and travel media. ST. MARYS, GA – The Kiwanis Club of St. Marys will present its Independence Day Celebration in Downtown St. Marys on Monday, July 4^th. The festival is one of the area’s most popular and well attended events.

The full day of activities will culminate with a Spectacular Fireworks Presentation just after Dusk over the St. Marys River. Downtown St. Marys offers many perfect locations for viewing from land or on water. ST. MARYS, GA—At the recent preview of locally-filmed Eye of the Hurricane, film star Gregory Cruz made a surprise appearance. Around his neck hung the alligator tooth necklace that he wore as the mysterious Seminole in the movie. That necklace, along with dozens of other Eye of the Hurricane props and costumes will be auctioned off on June 18 to raise funds that will enable the Coastal Georgia Film Alliance to bring more film projects to Coastal Georgia. Part of the proceeds from the auction will also benefit the newly formed St. Marys Little Theatre, an organization birthed to act as an incubator for local film talent. According to Film Alliance Chair Doug Vaught, the necklace will be a popular item, ranking right up there with the truck that Campbell Scott drove in the movie.

“There is a lot of nostalgia surrounding the items that we will be auctioning off on June 18,” Vaught said. “Hundreds of locals who were extras in Eye of the Hurricane may be interested in acquiring a momento of the movie. Also, many of the 450 people who recently attended the film’s previews in St. Marys have expressed an interest as well.”

Barbara Ryan, Vice-Chair of the Coastal Georgia Film Alliance and Chair of the St. Marys Little Theatre said that the auction is an excellent way to get the community more educated about the economic impact that movie-making can have for our area.

“The more our community understands and becomes involved in the entertainment industry arena, the more they will appreciate how this industry can make a difference in the economy,” Ryan said. “Georgia outpaces nearly every state in the nation in terms of incentives for filmmakers, and St. Marys and the surrounding area are in an enviable position to capitalize even more on the economic advantages of aggressively pursuing film production.”

In addition to the thousands of hours that Film Alliance volunteers put in each year to pursue the film industry, it takes money to support strong marketing programs. That, according to Ryan and Vaught, is the point of the auction.

Auction attendees will be amused and fascinated at times by the items that will come up for bid—a dozen or so of Homer’s lost eyeballs, the Seminole’s canoe, the truck, the wheelbarrow and its contents that kids collected after the hurricane, and costumes from every major player are part of the auction’s program. All items will come with a certification signed by Eye of the Hurricane Writer and Director Jesse Wolfe. ST. MARYS, GA—Tickets to the May 21 long awaited viewing of Eye of the Hurricane were sold out within 15 minutes. However, due to popular demand the Coastal Georgia Film Alliance will be hosting a second showing of the locally-filmed movie on May 28 at 10:00 am at the Kings Bay Cinemas. Those who have not already reserved a ticket should go to the St. Marys Film Museum this Saturday, May 7, at 11 a.m to get tickets. Each ticket is given in exchange for a $5 donation to the Film Alliance. The Museum is located at 300 Osborne Street.

Eye of the Hurricane, a Braveart Films production, was filmed in St. Marys, Georgia, last November. During filming, hundreds of local extras were used as part of the cast. Doug Vaught, Chair of Coastal Georgia Film Alliance, the organization responsible for bringing the film to St. Marys, said he anticipated an additional full house of local people eager to see their faces on the big screen.

“Local casting director Barbara Ryan has been fielding calls from extras for months now, people inquiring as to when the film would be shown,” Vaught said. “We just got confirmation from producer Susan Johnson and the theatre company that we could schedule a second showing.”

While there is a chance that the premier showings will not be the final cut of the film (mass distribution is later this year), both Vaught and Ryan are confident local residents will be impressed.

“We were invited to screen a rough cut of the film in Orlando a few months ago,” Ryan said. “It was amazing seeing our little town come alive in such spectacular color. I recognized a lot of local faces as the action literally flew by.”

Eye of the Hurricane, written and directed by Jesse Wolfe, tells the story of a family dealing with the aftermath of a storm. Much like the acclaimed Stand by Me, the story is told through the eyes of a nine-year-old who has lost his eye in the hurricane. Stars include Melanie Lynskey from Two and a Half Men, Campbell Scott (son of George C. Scott), and Brian Doyle-Murray (Bill Murray’s brother). Also playing major roles are José Zúñiga (Twilight and CSI), and Gregory Cruz (X-Files and Saving Grace).

Event organizers Jacquie Cushway and Glenda Barber said that the event will give artists an opportunity to share their art with the public and at the same time give observers a chance to see how art is developed.

“Camden County has an abundance of talented artists,” Cushway said. “Outdoor Arts in Motion is a perfect event to give these artists exposure.”

I’m looking forward to the Jazz at Doc’s this evening. I couldn’t go last Thursday but I could hear the music as it drifted downtown, it was so cool! Eight featured wines with mini food pairings will be served to guests, and a silent auction will be held with music and dancing afterward. Restaurants including Cedar Oak Café, Laurel Island Links Restaurant, Captain Seagle’s, Peppers, and others have donated entrée samplings for the evening, and local merchants are providing items for the silent auction. Funds raised will be used to help families of Veterans who require overnight stays at the Gainesville Fisher House. A veteran must live at least 50 miles from the VA Hospital in Gainesville to have a family member stay at the Fisher House.

According to event co-chairs Cindy Reinhold and Mary Stagl, The Fisher House, a 501c3 nonprofit organization, is similar to a Ronald McDonald house where there is no charge for family members to stay while their loved one is recuperating.

“Support of the Fisher House helps take away the financial burden of the men and women who have served our country,” Stagl said. “The Eagles are proud to host this event as a tribute to our honored veterans.”

The event will be emceed by veterans Frank Stagl, USN Retired, and Doug Vaught.

Where does one go to find a skull from “Pirates of the Caribbean,” or a mummy leg from Universal Pictures’ “The Mummy”? One could go to a Hollywood studio’s bone yard or, perhaps, a major prop warehouse. Or for those who live in or visit the Coastal Georgia area, they can simply go to the new St. Marys Film Museum at 300 Osborne Street in Downtown St. Marys, Georgia.

The St. Marys Film Museum, a new addition to the line-up of attractions in St. Marys, will open Saturday, April 16 and continue to be open, thereafter, every Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Film Museum is a project of the Coastal Georgia Film Alliance (CGFA), the organization responsible for bringing the recent filming of “Eye of the Hurricane,” (a feature film starting Campbell Scott and Melanie Lynskey), and two TV pilot projects to the area. According to CGFA Co-founder and Chair, Doug Vaught, the museum exemplifies part of the organization’s mission to “encourage education and appreciation of the film industry.”

“The Film Museum is a project we’ve been working on since the inception of the Film Alliance in 2010,” Vaught said. “And now, thanks to the support and contributions by local citizens and the hard work of the Film Alliance board of directors, the museum has come to life.” Vaught cited Joe and Terra Lucent as one example of the many people who came forward to bring the attraction to the city. The Lucents donated the space where the Film Museum is housed.

Displays such as the skull and the mummy’s leg, along with others that include boots worn in “Armageddon” and memorabilia from blockbusters like “Sea Biscuit” and “Angels and Demons,” were purchased with funds raised at last fall’s Hollywood Nights Film Gala. Other items including a Mary Pickford display and circa 1920s theater architectural elements were contributed by local supporters of the museum.

Barbara Ryan, Film Alliance Co-founder and Vice Chair, said kudos should go to all those who have stepped forward to help create such an interesting attraction that both visitors and residents can enjoy.

“It’s a little sliver of Hollywood right here in the Low Country,” Ryan said. “Our plans are to have revolving exhibits so that residents will have a reason to visit the museum several times a year. Ryan (who is also Chair of the St. Marys Convention & Visitors Bureau) said that the museum will enhance an already impressive collection of museum experiences that draw tourists to St. Marys.

“We already have the Submarine Museum, the Orange Hall House Museum, and the Cumberland Island National Seashore Museum,” Ryan said. “Add to that the museum-like experiences that visitors can enjoy at the Cumberland Island Visitors Center and the new St. Marys Welcome Center, and you’ve got more museum attractions than many towns four times the size of St. Marys.”

Ryan said the new museum will help St. Marys compete with other destinations for the treasured tourism dollars that help fuel the local economy. St. Marys Tourism Director Angela Wigger agreed.

“The number of visitors to our welcome center has skyrocketed since we set up our new location near the waterfront,” Wigger said. “Having the Film Museum will give our visitors one more reason to explore our city and discover all our great shops and restaurants.”

St. Marys Film Museum Curator Kelly Davis said a cadre of volunteers helped set up the museum. “I even drafted my husband,” Davis said.

Scott Davis built the display stands that showcase the Hollywood props.

The public is invited to an open house at the St. Marys Film Museum at 300 Osborne Street on Saturday, April 16, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Refreshments will be served, and a dedication ceremony and ribbon cutting will be held at noon.

Oak Grove Cemetery’s TOMB OF ACADIANS reads:

“Acadians deported from Grand Pre, Nova Scotia first found refuge in St. Domingo. Later, insurrection of natives drove them to St. Marys. Evangeline’s friend buried here.”

Many Acadians displaced during the Great Upheaval of 1754 – 1763 made their way to Santo Dominigo where they were mistreated. I first discovered St Marys by way of the Internet. When my daughter told me the Navy was going land her and my grandchildren here I did a search and was immediately captivated by what I found. That was more than ten years ago. Since that time I visited St Marys often, then inevitably, made this lovely place my home. I now work as a hostess at the St Marys Welcome Center and have worked as a docent at Orange Hall.

I can tell you firsthand that there is something very special about this little corner of the world; something healthful and wholesome. In the current issue of the St Marys Magazine, Alex Kearns has written an article that eloquently describes what I feel about living here. She says, ”Those who visit for the first time sense this delightful and gentle force (of spirit) and are inexorably drawn to return again.” I have often told visitors to our city that the only risk in coming to St Marys is that no one ever come here just once, they always return. “The senses come alive here, and it is impossible to remain aloof when surrounded by such exquisite sensory riches,” is how Kearns expresses the experience. St Marys is not only a place of beauty; it is also a place of spiritual richness.

Tuesday, Feb. 22 - Arrive early enough at St. Marys and bike 3 miles to the St. Marys Submarine Museum and the Cumberland Island Museum in downtown St. Marys.

Wednesday, Feb. 23 - Ride the 33-mile St. Marys Loop Ride, led by local cyclists. Visit the oldest church in Georgia, a War of 1812 site, the U.S. Navy Submarine Base, including the USS Bancroft Memorial, the Sugar Mill tabby ruins, and Crooked River State Park.

Thursday, Feb. 24 - We will take the ferry to Cumberland Island. Bike (you can rent one on the island) or just walk the 5-mile recommended leisurely hike on the island. Either way, Cumberland Island is one of the most beautiful places on earth and is a photographer's paradise. February is the time to see it, without the heat and the bugs.

Friday, Feb. 25 - Ride your bike to downtown St. Marys. Then take the ferry to Fernandina, FL. We will have optional lunch at the Gourmet Gourmet restaurant, then head out to visit Ft. Clinch. After Ft. Clinch, we will bike to the Atlantic Ocean for a beachfront snack. Then make our way back to the ferry for our return trip to St. Marys. 33 miles total.

Saturday, Feb. 26 - Head by car to the Okefenokee Wildlife Refuge and Okefenokee Adventures. We will arrive in time for lunch and an overview of the swamp by Chip and Joy Campbell. Then we start paddling the swamp by canoe or kayak on our guided tour of this third photographer's paradise of the week. Come Ride The Doodlebug

If you come to St. Marys by way of the Cumberland Sound Ferry, there’s a good chance you’ll be greeted at the waterfront by Historic St. Marys’ trolley known as “The Doodlebug.” Volunteers for the St. Marys Convention & Visitors Bureau conduct Historic District tours on The Doodlebug on a regular basis, and tours are also available by special arrangement for groups of ten or more. (You don’t have to arrive by ferry to enjoy the tours—everyone’s invited!)

During the early 1900s (and through the early 50s), “doodlebugs” were a popular mode of transportation connecting cities short distances away from each other via the railroad tracks. Doodlebugs were self-propelled gas-electric cars that provided minimal passenger and mail service on lightly used branch rail lines. One such doodlebug ran between St. Marys and Kingsland. Former St. Marys mayor Jerry Brandon remembers riding The Doodlebug to Kingsland around 1953. It cost a dime to ride at that time. That same doodlebug is said to reside in the St. Louis Transportation Museum today.

As you board The Doodlebug, the history lesson begins and doesn’t stop until you return to the waterfront more than an hour later. Each volunteer has his or her own delivery style and their own stories, but the geography covered is the same. You’ll ride up Osborne Street and along the way learn about our city’s founders, about the historic homes and churches and the roles they played in wars. You’ll hear about how Aaron Burr escaped to The Clark House after his infamous duel and about the last battle of the War of 1812 that was fought right here in St. Marys. You’ll hear stories of smugglers and statesmen and ride by the commemorative oak stump that marks the place where city residents honored George Washington when he died. You’ll learn about steamship captains of the 1800s and the Acadians buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery. Volunteers weave their own personal stories throughout their presentation making each tour unique.

Come ride The Doodlebug and enjoy the stories that will take you back centuries, back even to the

pre-establishment of St. Marys as a city (1787), back to the times when Guale and Timucuan Indians roamed the fertile lands living off the bounty of oysters and other seafood.

Here in St. Marys we like to say “our town is not very wide, but it sure is deep.” So true—St. Marys is deep in history. For a fascinating glimpse of St. Marys’ historical significance, hop aboard The Doodlebug!
