St. Marys' Peace Garden Recognizes Georgia's Unique 1812 Connection

http://www.canadainternational.gc.ca/atlanta/eyes_abroad-coupdoeil/st_marys_1812.aspx?lang=eng&view=d

The Consulate General of Canada in Atlanta joined leaders in St. Marys, Georgia to dedicate the community’s 1812 Binational Heritage Peace Garden.

Congressman Jack Kingston meets with U.S. National Park staff and guest in St. Marys, Georgia

St. Marys Garden is the 10th of 23 Canadian and U.S. Peace Gardens that make up the new Binational Heritage Peace Garden Trail. The trail, coordinated by the Binational Alliance, is a special initiative to commemorate the Bicentennial of the War of 1812 and 200 years of peace between Canada and the U.S.

St. Marys is Georgia’s southernmost coastal city. It is now also home to the first Binational Peace Garden located beyond the Southern Great Lakes. Although small in population, this unique community has many stories to share -- from its Acadian history to the War of 1812 Battle of Point Peter that took place January 11-15, 1815.

Located next to the historic Oak Grove Cemetery, the garden was dedicated in a ceremony with guests including Binational Alliance Executive Director Arlene White (Niagara, Canada), Consul Robert Pengelly (Consulate General - Atlanta), Georgia State Representative Jason Spencer and other local civic, business and tourism leaders. The newly dedicated garden will be maintained by St. Marys’ Earthkeepers. The Earthkeepers are led by Canadian Alex Kearns, a longtime St. Marys resident.

In addition to its connection to the Binational Peace Garden Trail, the St. Marys Peace Garden is paired with a garden in Fort Erie, Ontario -- the site of some of the most significant battles of the War of 1812. The Fort Erie peace garden was dedicated on June 29, 2012 during the launch of the 26th Annual Binational Friendship Festival.

The peace gardens first began in 2008 and more than 20 similar projects have since been launched in the Niagara and Southern Great Lakes regions of Canada and the U.S. -- except for the new St. Marys’ location, which is the first garden outside the region. Binational Alliance executives expect that more than 60 bicentennial themed gardens may be launched by 2014.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE…

COLLEGE FOOTBALL IN CAMDEN
10th Annual Ralph J. Bunche Classic to be played November 3, 2012

St. Marys, GA—On November 3 at 1:00 p.m., Tigers and Gyrenes will come head to head at Camden County High School's Chris Gilman Stadium. Edward Waters College will face Ave Maria University's Gyrenes in the only college football competition in Camden County.

You know what a Tiger is, but for those of you who don't know what a Gyrene is, here you go: A Gyrene is remembered with great nostalgia by older Americans who identify the name with that special breed of young men who fought the desperate battles of Belleau Wood and the island campaigns of the Pacific. These men formed the battle history of the United States Marine Corps and fashioned an ethos that inspires the men and women who serve in today's Marine Corps.

Jacksonville's Edward Waters College and Ave Maria University will vie for the winning title of the historic Ralph J. Bunche Classic. L. J. Williams, event chair, said that the Classic is expected to draw hundreds of visitors who will be contributing to the economy of Camden County.

"College football fans from several states will be staying in our hotels, eating in our restaurants, and having the opportunity to discover all that Camden County has to offer," Williams said. "Our hopes are that these visitors will return and spend more time here and tell others what a great place we live in."

Williams went on to say that all locals are encouraged to attend as well, to show support for this classic event and to honor its name same, Ralph J. Bunche.

Ralph J. Bunche was an American political scientist and diplomat who received the 1950 Nobel Peace Prize for his late 1940s mediation in Palestine. He was the first person of color to be so honored in the history of the Prize. He was involved in the formation and administration of the United Nations. In 1963, he received the Medal of Freedom from President John F. Kennedy. Bunche founded a trade school that later became an all-black high school in Camden County.

The community can become involved through sponsorships and/or by purchasing tickets to the game. General admission to the game is $10 in advance, $12 on game day and for children/students $5 in advance and $7 on game day. Family packages are also available, and groups of 20 are eligible for a discount. Tickets may be purchased at the Kingsland and St. Marys Welcome Centers, Quality Cleaners, Camden Re-Entry, Spring Bluff Food Store (Reed's Store in Waverly), and on base at MWR. For ticket information, call Emma Rogers at 912-222-2188, and for ticket or vendor information, call L. J. Williams at 912-552-4494. Vendor space is still available.

$50,000 Hudgens Prize Competition

The prestigious Hudgens Prize Visual Arts Competition is back this year, with a stunning cash award of $50,000 and an invitation for a solo exhibition for one very talented artist.  The Hudgens Prize is one of the largest art awards given in the entire nation, and is open only to Georgia residents.  The purpose of the competition is to elevate and promote the arts in Georgia, as well as to offer a transformational opportunity for the winning artist.

“We are extremely excited to again be able to offer such an important award competition to the artists of Georgia,” said Teresa Osborn, Executive Director at the Hudgens.  “Besides bringing the work of all the entered artists to the attention of world class jurists, the competition awards a large cash stipend to the winning artist that should allow them to concentrate fully on their art for the following year, without financial strain and distractions, which is truly an invaluable opportunity.”

The Hudgens Prize was last awarded in 2010, to artist Gyun Hur of Atlanta.  Hur received both national and international recognition following her receipt of the award, including selection for an Artadia Award and exhibits in Chicago and Hong Kong, and had her solo exhibit at the Hudgens in December 2011.

“We are strongly committed to supporting the arts and artists in Georgia,” states Angela Nichols, Programming & Education Director at the Hudgens.  “The Hudgens Prize is underwritten by an anonymous donor and we are greatly honored that their support allows us to offer this exciting competition.”

An important addition to the competition this year is the formation of the Hudgens Prize Advisory Committee, made up of Georgia arts leaders: Susan Bridges, Tina Cox, Jerry Cullum, Susannah Darrow, Julia Fenton, Gyun Hur, Marianne Lambert, Tina Lilly and Michael RooksThis committee will help guide the shape and form of the Hudgens Prize competition.

The Hudgens Prize competition is open to any individual artist living as a full time resident in the state of Georgia, age 18 and up.  Visual artwork of any medium will be considered, but works previously exhibited at the Hudgens are ineligible and all work must have been completed within the last two years.  Entry requires a $30 non-refundable fee, and entitles each artist to submit up to 5 entries.

Competition entries are to be submitted online via digital upload, and will be accepted between November 1, 2012 and February 1, 2013.  Artists may visit the Hudgens’ website starting November 1st to access the link for entering their works.  There will also be a helpful video tutorial, available on the Hudgens’ website starting October 1, explaining the online submission process.

A jury panel, to be announced shortly, will review the images and artist statements in February of 2013, and will select four artists to display their work in the Finalist’s Exhibition.  Each of the four Finalists will receive a $1,500 cash stipend to help cover expenses relating to the exhibition, such as materials, framing, transportation of artwork, etc.

The Hudgens Prize will be awarded by the jury panel based on in-person visits to the four Finalist’s studios and the works on view in the Hudgens Prize Finalist’s Exhibition, to open on June 8, 2013.  The $50,000 prize winner will be announced at the Hudgens Prize Award Celebration, which will take place in August.

For more information and the full Rules of Entry, please visit the Hudgens’ website at www.thehudgens.org.

The Hudgens Center is a non-profit organization that has been focused on the arts since its establishment in 1981.  The Hudgens’ mission is to bring art lovers, leaders and learners together through quality programs and exhibits.  That mission is accomplished through visual arts initiatives, such as year round fine art exhibits and classes for all ages, and community arts initiatives, which reach out to underserved populations.

The Hudgens Center for the Arts is located at 6400 Sugarloaf Parkway, Bldg. 300, in Duluth, in the Gwinnett Center complex.  For more information about art exhibits, events and classes at the Hudgens, please visit the website at www.thehudgens.org or call 770-623-6002.

Zinfandel or Shiraz)

1 Lemon cut into wedges

1 Orange cut into wedges

1 Lime cut into wedges

2 Tbsp sugar

Splash of orange juice or lemonade

1 Cup of raspberries or strawberries (may use thawed or

frozen)

1 Small can of diced pineapples (with juice)

4 Cups anything with sparkle, Ginger Ale, Sprite, even

diet Sprite will work

ST. MARYS RAILROAD DAYS BRINGS BACK YESTERYEAR.
FEATURES BUILD A SCARECROW EVENT
ST. MARYS RAILROAD DAYS FESTIVAL
BUILD A SCARECROW
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 13, 10 A.M. TO 5 P.M.
THEATRE BY THE TRAX, 1100 OSBORNE ST., ST. MARYS, GEORGIA

ST. MARYS, GA—Theatre by the Trax invites everyone to experience yesteryear in a celebration of St. Marys Railroad Days on October 13 at Theatre by the Trax in St. Marys, Georgia. Admission is free.

As part of St. Marys' Hay Days event, attendees can build their own scarecrow to be displayed either at their homes or businesses or along the streets of Downtown St. Marys. Scarecrow forms, clothes, and accessories will be available on site.

Commemorating 104 years of service by St. Marys Railroad, tours of the St. Marys Railroad Locomotive will be offered as well as rides on small railcars. A display of 1/8 scale steam locomotives will stir up nostalgia for the great iron horse of the old days. Hoboes will entertain throughout the day. Live music, food and other vendors, Fire Department clowns, and a variety of exhibits including the St. Marys Police Department Dragoon, round out the all-day festival.

According to Doug Vaught, co-owner of Theatre by the Trax, having an annual celebration of our railroad's history makes sense because the railroad played a big role in the history of Camden County.

"St. Marys Railroad was integral to the operation of Gilman Paper Company when it was in business," Vaught said. "And the railroad still serves Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base. It is fitting to celebrate the railroad's history on the grounds of the old train workstation that has now been converted into a community theatre."

Vaught and his wife, Jeanne, plan to make St. Marys Railroad Days an annual event.

St. Marys Railroad Days is sponsored by St. Marys Railroad, Tribune & Georgian, K-BAY 106, and Mark V Photography. Call 912-729-1103 for more information.
